This podcast is a recording from the Russian Music Festival, which took place on February 28th in Singletary Center for the Arts Recital Hall and was presented by the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Fine Arts School of Music. The program follows.
Ron Pen, a professor in the UK School of Music, discussed how Appalachian music unities people and place, and how the styles brought to the region by its immigrant residents combined and generated several new musical genres, such as swing, bluegrass, rockabilly, and contry. Music creates a bond that binds individuals as shared community and creates a society based on values rooted to identiy and place.
The UK ArtsAsia Festival will bring the acoustic quartet Huun Huur Tu to the Bluegrass for a concert Oct. 8, at the Singletary Center for the Arts. The quartet's concert is one of three featured events centered on the art of throat singing.
Concert is joint-effort between the School of music and Latin American Studies Program.
This concert featuring UK faculty and students, as well as international guest artists, will take the stage at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Worsham Theater
