An Evening with Shale: Conversations on UK's Literary Arts Journal

Shale is the University of Kentucky's own undergraduate literary arts journal. Comprised of fiction, poetry, and visual art from talented UK students, Shale is published once a semester to much fanfare. Part of that fanfare is the traditional reception, an event that is free to attend to an art-loving public. Students published in Shale, fans of the magazine, and a number of faculty members meet to celebrate another successfully assembled issue, as well as share their work in a public reading.

The Creative Thought Process: Katie Cross and Kendra Sanders

The student co-presidents of the Graphite Creative Writing Association were brought together by the group’s faculty advisor, English associate professor Julia Johnson. The young student organization will work to do for the other creative writers on the University of Kentucky’s campus what the club has already done for them—create a stronger sense of fellowship and community.

Cultivating Fellowship: Pearl James & Katie Cross of Sigma Tau Delta

The University of Kentucky chapter of Sigma Tau Delta—an honor society for students majoring in English—has a lot on its plate. While not entirely new to campus, it has returned to UK with a renewed focus on cultivating fellowship between English majors while also expanding the reach of the department and its students into the Lexington community.
