Not Your Average Campus Stroll: GWS Helps Bring First Ever Art Walk to Campus

By Kristen Smith

The Student Activities Board (SAB) along with University of Kentucky's Art MuseumMartin Luther King CenterAlternative Service Breaks and the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies will be bringing the first ever Art Walk to campus. Join them 3-6 p.m. today (Friday), Sept. 22, starting at the UK Art Museum. Students will have the opportunity to journey through familiar parts of campus while interacting with various student organizations and art pieces, including an exhibition from Los Angeles artist Alison Saar.

The underlying theme of the Art Walk is inspired by Alison Saar’s exhibit, "Breach," on view now at the UK Art Museum. In "Breach," Saar looks back at the Great Mississippi River Flood of 1927 to investigate enduring social and cultural themes.

“After the recent destruction in Houston brought about by Hurricane Harvey, I think Saar’s work has a very strong and current message,” said Courtney Marburger, director of Cultural Arts.

“This event is both thought-provoking as well as an easy way for students to show creativity in a friendly environment,” Marburger added.

SAB brings more than 60 entertaining, educational and enriching programs that are reflective of contemporary issues and trends to the University of Kentucky annually. These programs are designed to enhance the college experience for students, faculty, staff and the greater Lexington community. Connect with SAB at www.uksab.org, follow them on Twitter at http://twitter.com/UKSAB or like them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/UKSAB/.
