ESL - Brazil Scientific Mobility Program
In September, the Center for English as a Second Language welcomed a new group of students from Brazil to campus. They are participants in the Brazil Scientific Mobility Program which provides scholarships to undergraduate students for study in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields. After completion of an academic year, they will return to Brazil to complete their degrees. This program is part of the Brazilian government's initiative to grant scholarships to students for study abroad. The program provides an exchange experience at a U.S. college or university to a diverse group of top students, expanding the academic and research exchange between the U.S. and Brazil. At an outdoor reception in their honor, Dr. Thomas Clayton, Executive Director of the CESL, and Dr. Elizabeth Leibach, Director of UK’s International Center, each spoke to welcome the cohort. Additionally, Dr. Erik Myrup from the Department of History gave a short presentation on Brazilian history and culture. Later that same week, the new students went to the CESL Fall Festival hosted by Karen Papp at Larchmont Farm in Nicholasville. They enjoyed hayrides, apple cider, square dancing, and a bonfire – all the hallmarks of a traditional fall in their new home. Photography By: Dana Rogers
