LEXINGTON, Ky. (Oct. 31, 2024) — Frank X Walker, celebrated poet and former Poet Laureate of Kentucky, recently released his latest collection of historical poetry, “Load in Nine Times,” published by Liveright.
Walker, an English professor in the University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences, draws upon the rich tapestry of Black Civil War soldiers’ experiences, including the stories of his own ancestors who enlisted in the Union Army for their freedom. Moving chronologically from the antebellum era through Reconstruction, Walker weaves together the voices of the U.S. Colored Troops, their families, slave owners and such historical figures as Frederick Douglass, Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Garner. The result is a series of “persona poems.”
“This book feels like the convergence of so many important but under-told stories about Kentucky history that I’ve been trying to tell for decades,” Walker said. “Particularly the way Black folks, including my own ancestors, have contributed to not only the Commonwealth but the nation.”
“Load in Nine Times” explores history through a poetic lens, illuminating the experiences and contributions of Black Americans during a pivotal period in U.S. history. Walker’s work honors those who fought for freedom and seeks to enrich our understanding of the complex narratives that have shaped the nation.
Walker is an acclaimed poet, writer and co-founder of the Affrilachian Poets. His work often explores themes of race, identity and the complexities of American history, earning him recognition as a powerful voice in contemporary literature.
